Special facts

Metropol Parasol  is one of worlds largest timber engineering constructions with 3400 individual wooden elements.

The measures of the elements are:  length max. = 16,5 m, thicknesses betw. 68 and 311 mm, largest (trunk) element 16,5 x 3,5 x 0,14 m. The construction consists of 3000 connection nodes that are highly load-bearing.

Architect's word

„Metropol Parasol“ is the new icon project for Sevilla, - a place of identification and to articulate Sevilla's role as one of Spains most fascinating cultural destinations.

„Metropol Parasol“ explores the potential of the Plaza de la Encarnacion to become the new contemporary urban centre.

Its role as a unique urban space within the dense fabric of the medieval inner city of Sevilla allows for a great variety of activities such as memory, leisure  and commerce. A highly developed infrastructure helps to activate the square, making it an attractive destination for tourists and locals alike.

The „Metropol Parasol“ scheme with its large parasol structures offers an archeological site, a farmers market, an elevated plaza, multiple bars and restaurants underneath and inside the parasols, as well as a panorama terrace on the very top of the parasols.

The parasols grow out of the archeological excavation site into a contemporary landmark. The columns become prominent points of access to the museum below as well as to the plaza and panorama deck above, defining a unique relationship between the historical and the contemporary city. „Metropol Parasols“ mixused character initiates a dynamic development for culture and commerce in the heart of Sevilla.

Finnforest's comment

The wooden structure of Metropol Parasol is approx. 150m long, 75m wide and 28m high. The material is glued Kerto-Q LVL, which are arranged to an orthogonal grid of 1,50m x 1,50m. Only the Kerto material was able to be used in such a large and complex structures as the Metropol Parasol is. Over 3000 different wood elements are manufactured at Finnforest building component factory in Aichach, Germany and in total have a volume of approx. 2500 m³ parallel laminated veneer Kerto. The wooden structure is covered by 2-c-polyurethan, protecting the elements against wether influences.

The integral planning and close electronic exchange of data between all partners in planning process were essential for the development and construction of „Metropol Parasol“. The data of the architectural modell were directly integrated into the programs of the structural designers and the building company for wood and further edited there.

Especially the perfectly coordinated team work of Finnforest project team together with the architects Jürgen Mayer H. and the engineers of ARUP gives this project the enormous uniqueness and extraordinary character.

The Parasol construction will be finished and opened in spring 2011.
